Today, we are looking at the UN’s AI Environmental Transparency Initiative.
🌱 Why has the initiative been launched?
Following from the UNU-INWEH's report on AI’s resource demands from 3 June 2026, titled “Environmental Cost of AI: Energy Use, Carbon, Water and Land Footprints”, the UN is calling for greater transparency and more accountability across the AI and datacenter sector. On 23 June 2026 in a speech held at London Climate Action Week, the UN’s Secretary-General António Guterres therefore announced the launch of the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative.
🌱 What is the initiative calling for?
With the initiative, the UN is calling for major private sector AI companies to publicly disclose their systems’ full environmental impacts – including their carbon, water and land footprints – and to commit to powering all of their datacenters with renewable energy by 2030. Guterres said that there should be “[n]o more hidden costs”, adding that “[i]f AI is to help build a better future, it must be honest about what it costs us now”. In response to the new initiative, Professor Kaveh Madani, who led the research for the UNU-INWEH's report from 3 June 2026, said that “[t]he industry now has a golden chance to change some of the wrong perceptions that have been shaped by disinformation campaigns against AI to ensure that AI is an enabler of sustainability transition and not its enemy”.
🌱 Why is transparency and accountability needed?
Through the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative, the UN aims to make transparency and accountability “foundational principles” for the responsible development of AI infrastructure. The idea is that, while AI has the potential to accelerate climate solutions, publicly available and comparable data on the environmental impacts is needed to support informed policymaking. In line with this, at the First Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance held on 6 July 2026 in Geneva, Guterres stated: “AI may feel intangible — but its footprint is not. Data centres already consume more electricity than most countries. By 2030, they could use more electricity than all but five nations — and enough water to meet the needs of all 1.3 billion people in sub-Saharan Africa for an entire year. And too often, the communities hosting this infrastructure are asked to carry the burden — without the information they need or the benefits they deserve.”
🌱 How are datacenters being powered?
In July 2025, Guterres first called on all major AI companies to commit to using only renewable energy to power their datacenters by 2030, and he has now repeated this call in light of the finding of the UNU-INWEH's report from 3 June 2026. According to the International Energy Agency, about 30% of the electricity consumed by datacenters globally currently comes from coal, 27% comes from renewables, 26% comes from natural gas, and 15% comes from nuclear energy. Despite pledges being made by several large tech companies – including Amazon and Google, only half of the energy demand for datacenters is expected to come from renewables in the coming 5 years.
