Today, we will be finishing with looking at new EV battery factories across North America.
🔋 Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials is building a battery materials campus in South Carolina. The campus facilities will recycle, refine, and remanufacture cathode and anode materials – such as cobalt, copper, lithium, and nickel. Redwood also has a plant that produces anode copper foil in Nevada. The startup received a $2 billion loan from the U.S. government in early 2023 to fund its facilities. Redwood Material's total investment is projected to be $5.5 billion, with a total promised capacity of 200 GWh.
🔋 Rivian
Rivian is aspiring to build a large EV production facility – potentially including a cell manufacturing facility – in Georgia, with production planned for 2026. The project, however, remains to be confirmed.
🔋 SK Battery America
SK Battery America invested $2.6 billion in two manufacturing plants in Georgia. Its total investments are projected to be $2.6 billion, with a total promised capacity of 22 GWh.
🔋 Stellantis
Stellantis and Samsung SDI formed a joint venture to build two EV battery facilities, one in Indiana and another one elsewhere. Stellantis also formed a joint venture with LG in 2021 to build a factory in Ontario, with an annual capacity of 40 GWh. Its total investment is projected to be $6.8 billion, with a total promised capacity of 78 GWh.
🔋 Tesla
In January 2023, Tesla announced its plans to expand its Nevada factory with the capacity to annually produce 1.5 million more batteries for light duty vehicles. It also plans to expand its gigafactory in Austin and its manufacturing facility in California. Tesla's total investment is projected to be about $10.9 billion, with a total promised capacity of 199 GWh.
🔋 Toyota
Toyota announced its plans to build a battery plant in North Carolina in 2021. The plant will produce both cells and modules. Toyota is also building a battery lab for $48 million in Michigan, which is expected to begin its operations in 2025. Toyota's total investment is projected to be $5.9 billion.
🔋 Volkswagen
Volkswagen set up a separate battery company called “PowerCo SE” in July 2022 to build batteries for its EVs. One of its three cell factories will be in Canada. Volkswagen's total investment is projected to be about $5.2 billion, with a total promised capacity of 90 GWh.
🔋 Volvo
Volvo has a battery assembly factory in South Carolina, but it has not yet confirmed any other plans for producing batteries in North America.
